Career:
Amateur Career: Thornton went to Ardrey Kell High School in Charlotte and then played college baseball at the University of North Carolina for the Tar Heels. As a freshman, he had a 12–1 win–loss record with a magnificent 1.37 ERA and earned freshman All-American honors. In his sophomore year (2014), he went 7-4 with a 2.73 ERA and was named to the All-Atlantic Coast Conference second team. He also played summer baseball with the Orleans Firebirds in the Cape Cod Baseball League.
Professional Career
Houston Astros: Developed in the 5th round of the 2015 MLB draft by the Astros, he began his ace career in the minor leagues, showing solid performances at different levels including Low-A, High-A, Double-A, and Triple-A. In 2018, he was named Pacific Coast League Pitcher of the Week for outstanding performances with the Fresno Grizzlies.
Toronto Blue Jays: Traded to the Blue Jays in November 2018, Thornton made the Opening Day roster in 2019 and debuted in MLB on March 31, 2019.
