Tendulkar-Anderson Trophy: Symbol of India-England Cricket Legacy

The Tendulkar-Anderson Trophy (commonly and officially referred to as the Anderson-Tendulkar Trophy) is a new Test cricket trophy introduced in 2025 to be awarded to the winner of each Test series between England and India. The trophy is named in honor of two of cricket’s greatest players: England’s James Anderson, the highest wicket-taking fast bowler in Test history, and India’s Sachin Tendulkar, the all-time leading run-scorer in Test cricket.

Sachin Tendulkar played a pivotal role in ensuring that the legacy of Mansur Ali Khan Pataudi remained associated with the India vs England men’s Test series, even after the main trophy was renamed. When Tendulkar learned that the Pataudi Trophy was being retired and replaced by the Tendulkar-Anderson Trophy (in honour of himself and James Anderson), his immediate action was to reach out to the Pataudi family to discuss how to preserve the Pataudi connection.

Tendulkar then engaged in detailed discussions with the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI), the England and Wales Cricket Board (ECB), and ICC chairman Jay Shah. He proposed the idea of introducing a special medal in Pataudi’s name as a tribute to his leadership and legacy. This led to the creation of the Pataudi Medal of Excellence, which is now awarded to the winning captain of the India-England Test series.

Sachin Tendulkar speaking on this Trophy

I remember some time ago when the Pataudi Trophy was retired by ECB and BCCI, and then a few months down the line, when I was informed about this – the trophy being named after the two of us – that came as a pleasant surprise.

The call that I made immediately after that was to the Pataudi family and I spoke to them I also spoke about keeping the Pataudi legacy alive, and said ‘I’ll have some ideas. I will come back to you’.

Tendulkar on Pataudi

Tendulkar emphasized that Pataudi’s leadership and inspiration for generations should never be forgotten, and he was pleased with the outcome—that while the series is now played for the Tendulkar-Anderson Trophy, the winning captain is also honoured with the Pataudi Medal of Excellence. This solution ensures that the Pataudi name remains wedded to this historic cricketing contest.
