South Africa surprisingly dropped young star Tristan Stubbs from their T20 World Cup 2026 squad. The 25-year-old batter, known for his big IPL hits, was left out despite high expectations. This bold move has fans and experts arguing.
Key Reasons for Dropping Stubbs
- Stubbs had a tough 2025 in T20 internationals, scoring just 152 runs in seven matches with an average of 21.71 and a strike rate of 121.60. That’s a big drop from his earlier strong performances.
- His poor form continued in the recent T20I series against India, where he made only 23 runs in two innings at a strike rate of 104.55. In the ongoing SA20 league, he’s scored just 28 runs in three matches with a strike rate of 103.70.
- He also struggled badly against spin bowling, with his strike rate falling to 124.68 over 28 T20 innings in 2025, way down from 180 in IPL 2024.
Squad Changes and Alternatives
South Africa has brought back bowler Kagiso Rabada after his injury. They also selected Jason Smith and Donovan Ferreira for their good recent form and all-round skills—Ferreira can keep wickets too and has scored 240 runs in 15 T20I matches.
Aiden Markram captains the team, hoping to win their first white-ball trophy after finishing second last time. This picks players in form rather than unproven talent, to handle subcontinent pitches carefully.
