In a powerful display of sportsmanship rising above political tensions, 14 former international cricket captains have written a joint appeal to the Government of Pakistan expressing concern over the health of former Prime Minister and 1992 World Cup-winning captain Imran Khan.
The initiative has been led by Indian batting legend Sunil Gavaskar. Among the prominent signatories are Michael Atherton, Allan Border, Michael Brearley, Greg Chappell, Ian Chappell, Belinda Clark, Sunil Gavaskar, David Gower, Kim Hughes, Nasser Hussain, Clive Lloyd, Kapil Dev, Stephen Waugh and John Wright.
Call for Treatment in Line with International Standards
In their statement, the former captains described Imran Khan as one of the greatest all-rounders and captains in cricket history. They highlighted his leadership in guiding Pakistan to its historic 1992 World Cup victory and acknowledged his later role as a democratically elected Prime Minister.
The letter urges Pakistani authorities to ensure that Khan is treated in accordance with international standards and provided with appropriate medical care, irrespective of political differences. The statement emphasizes the values of sportsmanship, respect and humanity.
Medical Examination Following Supreme Court Order
Seventy-three-year-old Imran Khan recently underwent a medical examination on the orders of Pakistan’s Supreme Court. According to reports, he has complained of losing nearly 85 percent of vision in his right eye. A medical team was sent to Rawalpindi’s Adiala Jail, where he has been held since August 2023. His party, Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI), has questioned the transparency of the medical process and demanded the presence of family members and private doctors during examinations.

Wasim Akram Also Voices Concern
Former Pakistan fast bowler Wasim Akram has also appealed via social media for better medical care for his former captain, expressing hope that Khan will receive the best possible treatment.
In Jail Since 2023
Imran Khan served as Pakistan’s Prime Minister from 2018 to 2022 and has been incarcerated since August 2023. More than 100 cases have been filed against him, which he has described as politically motivated.
The cricket fraternity’s collective appeal comes at a time of strained India-Pakistan relations, yet it sends a strong message that the spirit of sport and humanity transcends political divides.
