India’s quest for success on English soil has been marked by historic moments led by some of the finest captains in cricket history. Since India’s inaugural Test in England in 1932, only a select few Indian skippers have managed to clinch Test victories in the challenging conditions of England. Shubman Gill prepares to lead India in the upcoming series, the cricketing world watches keenly to see if he can join this elite group of Indian captains who have triumphed in England’s demanding Test arena.
Ajit Wadekar:
Wadekar captained the Indian cricket team during their historic 1971 tour of England, where India achieved their first-ever Test series win on English soil. The series consisted of three Test matches, with India winning the series 1–0 after two matches were drawn. The decisive victory came in the third Test at The Oval, where India won by 4 wickets. This victory was significant as it was India’s first Test series triumph in England and helped lift the spirits and belief of Indian cricket that they could win overseas. Wadekar’s leadership during this series, along with the performances of other notable players like Sunil Gavaskar, Bishan Singh Bedi, and Srinivas Venkataraghavan, set a new tone for Indian cricket.
Kapil Dev:
Dev captained the Indian cricket team during the 1986 tour of England, leading India to a historic 2-0 Test series victory out of the three matches played. This series win included India’s first-ever Test victory at Lord’s, achieved in the first Test where Kapil Dev’s all-round performance—taking five wickets and scoring crucial runs—earned him the Man of the Match award. The Indian team, under his inspirational leadership, also dominated the second Test, dismissing England for low scores and securing a convincing win. The third Test ended in a draw, but India had already sealed the series. This tour marked Kapil Dev’s first Test series win as captain, showcasing a well-balanced team effort with significant contributions from players like Dilip Vengsarkar and Chetan Sharma, and was considered one of India’s best performances in England.
Sourav Ganguly:
Under Ganguly’s captaincy, India achieved one of its most memorable overseas Test victories by defeating England by an innings and 46 runs at Headingley, Leeds, in August 2002. In this historic match, Ganguly himself contributed significantly with the bat, scoring a brilliant 128, as part of a dominant Indian first-innings total of 628/8 declared. This win was especially notable as it marked India’s first Test victory in England since 1986 and featured centuries from Ganguly, Rahul Dravid, and Sachin Tendulkar, showcasing a commanding team performance under Ganguly’s leadership.
Rahul Dravid:
The wall Rahul Dravid captained India to a memorable Test victory at Trent Bridge, Nottingham in 2007, leading the team to a 1-0 series win in England—India’s first Test series triumph on English soil in 21 years and only their third ever in the country. Under Dravid’s leadership, India clinched the second Test by seven wickets, with Zaheer Khan starring as the chief architect with nine wickets in the match, while Dravid’s tactical acumen and calm presence were pivotal throughout the series. This historic win at Nottingham set up the series victory, as the other two Tests at Lord’s and The Oval ended in draws, sealing Dravid’s legacy as one of India’s most successful overseas Test captains.
MS Dhoni:
Dhoni captained India to a historic Test victory at Lord’s in July 2014, ending a 28-year wait for a win at the iconic venue. India defeated England by 95 runs in the 2nd Investec Test of the series, with key contributions including Ajinkya Rahane’s maiden Test century, Bhuvneshwar Kumar and Ravindra Jadeja’s all-round performances, and a devastating 7-wicket haul by Ishant Sharma, whose success was guided by Dhoni’s strategic captaincy. India set a challenging target of 319 runs, and their disciplined bowling attack, under Dhoni’s leadership, ensured England fell short, securing India’s first Test win at Lord’s since 1986.
