Lionel Andres Messi is widely considered one of the greatest football players of all time. Messi’s much-awaited trip to Kerala has been officially called off, bringing disappointment to thousands of fans who had been eagerly anticipating the football icon’s first-ever visit to the state. The organizers confirmed on Monday that unforeseen logistical issues led to the cancellation, ending weeks of excitement and buildup surrounding the Argentine legend’s planned appearance.
Reason behind cancellation
Lionel Messi’s visit to Kerala in November 2025 for a highly anticipated friendly match between Argentina and Australia has been officially cancelled. The Argentine Football Association (AFA) cited Kerala’s lack of readiness and delays in completing logistical arrangements, including delays in securing FIFA’s approval for the venue, as the primary reasons for calling off the event. Originally scheduled for November 17 at Kochi’s Jawaharlal Nehru Stadium, the match was postponed after AFA announced that the team would travel to Spain for training and then play a friendly against Angola instead.

This announcement came as a huge disappointment to millions of Indian football fans eagerly waiting to see Messi in action. The visit had been planned for over a year with support from Kerala’s Sports Department and private sponsors, but issues such as delayed logistics, unfinished stadium renovations, and political controversies surrounding these preparations clouded the event. The sponsors and AFA are considering rescheduling the friendly to the FIFA international window in March 2026.
Fans Reaction
This cancellation ends weeks of anticipation and has caused heartbreak among fans, while also raising questions in Kerala about the handling of the event and the stadium renovation projects. Messi’s last visit to India was in 2011, so this would have been a significant moment for Indian football followers.
