The FIFA World Cup 2026, also called FIFA World Cup 26, will be the 23rd time this big soccer tournament happens. It will have 48 teams from different countries, more than before. The games will be played in 16 cities across the United States, Mexico, and Canada. The tournament will last from June 11 to July 19.
Qualification Impact
- More spots for teams to join the tournament are given to different regions: 8 for Asia, 9 for Africa, 6 for CONCACAF (which includes North and Central America and the Caribbean), 16 for Europe, 6 for South America, and 1 for Oceania. There are also two extra spots decided by intercontinental playoffs.
- By late 2025, 42 teams had already qualified, including the host countries USA, Canada, and Mexico, as well as unexpected teams like Curacao. There are still 6 spots left, which will be filled through playoff matches.
- The tournament’s bigger size helps smaller or new teams get a chance to play, but it might also make some group matches less competitive and uneven.
Group Stage Complexity
- There are twelve groups, so there will be 72 matches instead of 48. Because some third-place teams can move on, the tournament is less predictable every game counts, especially when deciding ties.
- The team draw uses four pots based on rankings, and teams from the same region won’t be placed in the same group, except for European teams (UEFA). In the knockout rounds, group winners get an advantage by being matched up against runners-up.
Weaker Teams Pros/Cons
- Advantages: Guaranteed three games boost exposure; best thirds (8/12) advance (~67% chance vs. 25% before), aiding upsets like Morocco 2022.
- Disadvantages: Tougher groups against powerhouses raise early exit risk; longer tournament strains smaller squads logistically.
Third Place Qualification
The eight best third-placed teams will qualify based on these rules:
First by points, then by goal difference, then by goals scored, followed by head-to-head results, and finally by fair play records. There are no limits on which part of the bracket these teams come from, so the best teams overall move on. This system is like the one used in the UEFA Euros and helps prevent teams from trying to game the system.

Changes for Fans
- Ticket prices have gone up to the highest levels ever in many categories, making travel more expensive for fans.
- Some countries, like the US and UAE, offer faster visa processing for people who have tickets, but having a ticket doesn’t mean you will definitely get a visa.
- With more matches and more cities hosting, getting around and planning will be even more important for fans to travel easily to and from the stadiums.
Whether you love football a lot or just watch it sometimes, this World Cup will give you amazing moments that will change the game forever.
