Usain Bolt, a retired Jamaican sprinter considered the best ever, won eight Olympic gold medals. He said that he’ll play cricket for Jamaica at the 2028 Los Angeles Olympics if the Jamaican Cricket Association picks him. Cricket is returning to the Olympics after 128 years, in the fast-paced T20 format. Six men’s teams and six women’s teams will compete from July 12 to 29, 2028.

Bolt once wanted to be a fast bowler in cricket. He also served as an ambassador for the 2024 T20 World Cup, showing his lifelong love for the sport.

Bolt’s Statement

In an Esquire magazine interview, 39-year-old Usain Bolt said he’s happily retired but ready to play if Jamaica’s cricket team calls him up. His coach shifted him to track and field in high school, but cricket has always been his first love in cricket-mad Jamaica.

Olympics Cricket Details

Each event has spots for 90 athletes per gender. Teams can have up to 15 players, and most days feature two matches at Fairgrounds Stadium. The women’s medal matches are on July 20, and the men’s on July 29.

Qualification Challenges

Teams qualify through a continental system, with the top-ranked team from each continent getting a spot. Jamaica is aiming for a Caribbean place via qualifiers, as pushed by the Jamaica Olympic Association. West Indies countries can join regional tournaments to represent the area.

Historical Debut

Cricket first appeared at the Olympics in 1900 in Paris. Great Britain played France in a men’s match and won the gold medal by 158 runs, it was a two-day game with 12 players per side. Cricket didn’t return to the Olympics until it was confirmed for the 2028 Los Angeles Games in 2023, a gap of 128 years.

LA 2028 Details

The 2028 Olympics in Los Angeles will feature cricket matches from July 12 to 29. Women’s finals for medals happen on July 20, and men’s on July 29. Six teams will play in each category using the fast-paced T20 format at a venue in Pomona Fairgrounds. Each team has a 15-player squad, with 90 spots total for athletes in women’s cricket and 90 for men’s.
