Australia’s Drop Star Players for T20 World Cup 2026 – Full List

Australia Cricket Team

Australia announced their provisional squad for the T20 World Cup 2026, hosted in India and Sri Lanka from February 7 to March 8, led by Mitchell Marsh. Players like Mitchell Owen and Mitchell Starc, were omitted from the 15-member group.

Mitchell Owen due to Poor Form

Mitchell Owen was left out of Australia’s 15‑member squad for the 2026 T20 World Cup mainly because selectors felt his recent form in T20Is and the Big Bash had dipped, with low returns in his last few international innings, and they instead backed other pace‑bowling all‑rounders like Cameron Green and Marcus Stoinis, as well as spin‑bowling all‑rounder Cooper Connolly, for better balance and versatility in the squad.

Mitchell Starc took Retirement

Mitchell Starc is not in Australia’s 15-member squad for the 2026 T20 World Cup because he had already retired from T20 internationals, so the selectors did not consider him an active option for this format.

Australia’s Squad for T20I World Cup 2026

Mitchell Marsh, Xavier Bartlett, Cooper Connolly, Pat Cummins, Tim David, Cameron Green, Nathan Ellis, Josh Hazlewood, Travis Head, Josh Inglis, Matthew Kuhnemann, Glenn Maxwell, Matthew Short, Marcus Stoinis and Adam Zampa.

The main group of players from 2021–24 is still there (Marsh, Head, Maxwell, Stoinis, Cummins, Hazlewood, Zampa), except for Owen. So there isn’t a big-name headlines like David Warner or Mitchell Starc, because by this stage they were no longer key to Australia’s T20 plans.

Why these changes were made?

  • Conditions in India and Sri Lanka have made the selectors prefer more spin bowlers. So they have picked a squad with a lot of spin options: Zampa, Kuhnemann, Connolly, Maxwell and Short can all bowl spin.
  • Selectors have chosen all-rounders who can do more than one job (like Marsh, Green, Stoinis, Maxwell, Connolly, Short) instead of players who mainly just hit big (like Owen), so the team can adjust better to different pitch conditions.

This is not the final squad. It can be changed until January 31, so Owen can still be added later if someone gets injured or the selectors change their mind.
